BREAKING NEWS: Minnesota Vikings Under Fire QB Decision

The Minnesota Vikings appear poised to continue bolstering their quarterback options, having made an intriguing signing during the earlier part of the offseason. Despite this, they have made a cautious move by securing Sam Darnold on a one-year, $10 million deal, reminiscent of fringe starting quarterback compensation. This move seems to serve as a precaution against not being able to secure a top quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft.

The decision to sign Darnold has faced criticism from Pro Football Focus, particularly regarding the financial terms of the deal. Brad Spielberger of PFF notes the reunion of Darnold with former teammate Josh McCown, who now serves as the quarterbacks coach for the Vikings. While acknowledging Darnold’s potential as a bridge quarterback, Spielberger questions the substantial raise given to him, suggesting it may be a strategy to avoid trading up in the draft.

Despite concerns, Darnold showed promise towards the end of the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers, indicating that some teams still believe in his abilities. With Kirk Cousins moving to Atlanta, the Vikings were compelled to make significant moves, especially with the 11th overall pick in the draft. It remains to be seen whether they will pursue a rookie quarterback with this pick or through a potential trade-up.

Is Sam Darnold the Minnesota Vikings’ Bridge or Backup Plan?

After a season honing his skills in Shanahan’s offense with the 49ers, Darnold emerges as somewhat of a mystery.

The outcome heavily depends on the Vikings’ success in trading up in the 2024 NFL Draft. It remains to be seen whether they will immediately field a quarterback like J.J. McCarthy or Drake Maye, or opt for them to serve as understudies behind Darnold, at least initially.

However, if the Vikings fail to secure a trade-up, entrusting Darnold, who boasts 63 touchdowns and 56 interceptions in his career, could pose a significant gamble for the 2024 season. This becomes especially precarious given the importance of maintaining a positive rapport with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and not jeopardizing hopes for a postseason return.
