The Reds secured a 3-0 victory over the Angels on Sunday, with five relievers combining for 8 1/3 innings of work after Frankie Montas, the starting pitcher, was forced out of the game in the first inning due to a forearm bruise. Montas was hit by a line drive from Taylor Ward but managed to throw Ward out at first base before leaving the mound following an examination by the team trainer.
Although X-rays showed no fractures, Montas informed reporters, including Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer, that he is experiencing enough soreness and swelling to cast doubt on his availability for his next start, scheduled for Friday against the Rangers. With no off-days for the Reds until May 2, they would need to find another starter if Montas requires more recovery time than just one turn through the rotation.
The possibility of placing Montas on the injured list is being considered to avoid being short-handed, but the team will assess his condition over the next few days before making a decision. Montas has recorded a 4.19 ERA over 19 1/3 innings for Cincinnati this season, following two strong initial starts with less impressive performances in his two outings prior to Sunday’s game.
