Fans enjoy playing the role of armchair general managers for their beloved sports teams. Recently, a Minnesota Vikings supporter got a taste of that fantasy—albeit in an unexpected way.
During a speech about faith and leadership at St. Philip the Deacon Church in Plymouth, Minnesota, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell invited questions from the audience. Seizing the chance to delve into football matters, one attendee raised the topic of NFL draft prospects, specifically quarterbacks JJ McCarthy and Drake Maye. Not only did the fan inquire about O’Connell’s opinions on these players, but they also provided a sort of impromptu scouting report to the active NFL coach.
Kevin O'Connell gave a speech last night at St. Philip the Deacon Church in Plymouth and got a full breakdown of McCarthy and Maye by a Vikings fan at the end lol. He gave a very interesting answer, noting that he killed some previous QB ideas in the past because he wasn't sold.… pic.twitter.com/cb2SR6lOJo

The fan praised McCarthy for his agility, noting his “really good feet,” and highlighted Maye’s skill in “anticipating windows” when passing.
With a touch of embarrassment, the fan then jokingly implored O’Connell to leverage his connections with the Patriots to facilitate a move up to the third pick. O’Connell responded by humorously mentioning that he may or may not have expressed his appreciation to Patriots owner Robert Kraft with a gesture like sending flowers.
O’Connell himself was drafted by the Patriots in the third round in 2008 and spent one season with the team.
Amidst widespread speculation, the Vikings have been rumored to be considering a trade to acquire a higher position in the 2024 NFL Draft, aiming to secure their future quarterback. Currently, the team holds the 11th and 23rd picks in the first round.
