The Chicago Cubs are potentially eyeing a trade with the Miami Marlins for a switch-hitter. Despite their strong start to the 2024 season, the Cubs remain just half a game shy of the division lead and are considering bolstering their roster through trades.
While the Cubs currently have few gaps in their batting order, they are still monitoring the trade market. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly suggests that the Cubs could pursue Josh Bell from the Miami Marlins.
Although Bell began the season well, his performance has declined sharply, with a .200/.300/.329 slash line. However, it’s important not to read too much into early-season struggles in Miami, and a slow start shouldn’t deter teams from pursuing him.
Despite potentially being on his fifth team since 2022, Bell has been a consistent player, with his frequent moves more reflective of his circumstances rather than his ability.
One challenge in targeting Bell as a first baseman and designated hitter is the strong performances of Michael Busch and Garrett Cooper. Both are currently batting over .300, with Busch showing promise due to his youth. However, it’s expected that Cooper may see a decline soon.
Nevertheless, adding Bell to the lineup could provide flexibility and insurance against unexpected declines in performance. The key consideration for the Cubs would be the cost, both in terms of finances and prospects. Engaging in a bidding war for a rotational hitter may not be the wisest move for Chicago.
