Breaking News: Cubs appear ready to engage in a memorable pitcher’s duel

The first game of the three-game series between the Atlanta Braves and the visiting Chicago Cubs on Monday sets the stage for an exciting pitching duel. The Braves will have right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (2-1, 1.53 ERA) facing off against Chicago left-hander Shota Imanaga (5-0, 1.08), two pitchers who rank among the league leaders in ERA.

Following a disheartening 4-3 walk-off loss to the New York Mets on Sunday, the Braves aim to bounce back from the end of their four-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Cubs secured a 5-4 victory in 10 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, clinching two out of three games in that series. Their recent form sees them holding a 5-5 record over the last ten games.

Baseball: Cubs' Imanaga named National League Rookie of the Month

This encounter marks the first meeting between Atlanta and Chicago this season, with their next matchup scheduled in Chicago on May 21-23. The Braves had the upper hand in their 2023 season series, winning 4-2. However, Chicago hasn’t claimed the season series since their 6-1 victory in 2017.

Imanaga, named National League Rookie of the Month for April, boasts the fourth-lowest ERA for a pitcher in their first seven career starts since 1912. In his most recent outing against San Diego, he pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts, contributing to the Cubs’ 3-2 win.

On the other side, Lopez, making his seventh start, has been consistent, allowing three runs only once this season. Despite receiving a no-decision in his last outing against Boston, where he surrendered two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts, Lopez’s performance has impressed Atlanta manager Brian Snitker.

Both teams showcase formidable offensive talent, with Marcell Ozuna leading the majors with 40 RBIs for Atlanta, while Chicago’s Cody Bellinger and Christopher Morel contribute to their team’s offensive prowess.

However, concerns arise for Atlanta as third baseman Austin Riley left Sunday’s game due to tightness in his left side, awaiting evaluation on Monday. Additionally, the Cubs are without former Braves player Dansby Swanson, who is sidelined with a right knee sprain.
