The Chicago Cubs have opted to place shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained right knee. In addition, they have reintroduced outfielder Seiya Suzuki to the team.
This determination was made on Friday as the Cubs embarked on a three-game series in Pittsburgh. Swanson’s placement on the injured list is retroactive to May 8.
Swanson has been contending with the knee problem since late April and sat out the Cubs’ previous game against San Diego on Wednesday. Instead of pushing him to continue playing through the injury, the team opted to give Swanson some time off.
“At this stage of the season, dealing with this for another four and a half months doesn’t appear feasible,” commented Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “So the hope is that with some rest now, he can put this behind him and not be bothered by it for the remainder of the season.”
Suzuki has not been on the field since April 15 due to a strained right oblique. Chicago chose to keep Suzuki out of the lineup on Friday to allow him time to recuperate after a couple of rehab starts earlier in the week.
