Thus far, the Cowboys have been unable to secure a new contract with five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore. His contribution was particularly crucial in 2023 following Trevon Diggs’ season-ending loss.
However, Gilmore remains a free agent, posing a risk for Dallas as they face the possibility of losing him in the upcoming weeks. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggests that the Kansas City Chiefs could be an ideal destination for Gilmore, given their ample cap space of over $15 million. This presents a challenge for the Cowboys, who cannot engage in a bidding war for his services.
In a May 6, 2024 article titled “1 NFL Veteran Free Agent That Could Help Each Super Bowl Contender in 2024,” Knox highlighted Gilmore’s strong performance with the Cowboys in 2023, where he maintained an impressive opposing passer rating of 82.7 in coverage while starting all 17 games.
Although a reunion with Dallas remains a possibility, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports that there are currently no immediate plans for Gilmore to re-sign with the team. Despite Gilmore’s established pedigree as a five-time Pro Bowler and the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, the Chiefs possess the financial flexibility to secure his services.
