Ottawa Senators’ general manager Steve Staios, alongside Travis Green, the newly appointed head coach, was officially introduced to the public on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Following seven consecutive seasons without making the playoffs, Green expressed his readiness to face the pressure associated with steering the team towards postseason success.
“I’m driven to win the Stanley Cup, and I’m committed to pushing this team to reach that pinnacle,” stated Green during his unveiling.
Green replaces interim head coach Jacques Martin, who assumed the role after D.J. Smith’s dismissal last December. Martin, who previously coached the Senators from 1996 to 2004, will remain with the organization as an advisor to aid in the transition of leadership.
The search for a new coach began midway through the season, with Staios revealing that they interviewed approximately six candidates for the position. Reflecting on the decision, Staios emphasized the qualities that led them to select Green: “We believe Travis embodies the leadership, passion, experience, and player development skills that align with our team’s values.”
Travis Green, a 53-year-old hailing from Castlegar, B.C., brings substantial NHL coaching experience to the table. He notably served as the head coach for the Vancouver Canucks for over four seasons, from 2017 to 2021. During his tenure, the Canucks achieved a record of 133-147-34 and clinched a playoff berth in the 2019-20 season, albeit falling short in the second round against Vegas in Game 7. Additionally, Green held an interim head coaching role with the New Jersey Devils this past season, where he garnered an 8-12-1 record.
Despite Green’s mixed playoff results, Ottawa Senators’ general manager Steve Staios expressed confidence in his capabilities, emphasizing that selecting a coach involves considerations beyond mere win-loss records.
‘Young, talented team’
Green, recognizing the Senators’ potential, described them as a youthful and talented squad with ample room for development. He outlined his intention to propel them to success by prioritizing accountability and defining players’ roles within the team.
Communication and honesty are paramount in Green’s coaching philosophy, as he believes players thrive when they know what is expected of them. While he acknowledges that building accountability takes time, he remains committed to fostering it within the team.
Characterizing himself as a firm and meticulous coach who sets high standards, Green assures players that his approachability doesn’t diminish his demand for excellence. He recognizes the expectations associated with coaching in Canada, particularly in Ottawa, and pledges to devote himself entirely to fulfilling the fans’ desire for victory.
