Oklahoma’s third-year wide receiver Gavin Freeman announced via social media late Tuesday night that he intends to enter the transfer portal, still holding two years of eligibility. “I’m heading into the transfer portal with 2 years left,” Freeman shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing gratitude to the University of Oklahoma and its fans for their support.
Freeman, who initially joined the Sooners as a preferred walk-on from nearby Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City in 2022, swiftly gained popularity among fans. His debut in the season opener against UTEP saw him scoring a long touchdown on an end-around handoff. The following year, he made headlines again by returning a punt for a touchdown in a dominating 73-0 victory against Arkansas State.
During the previous season, Freeman recorded 19 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown, along with five rushes for 20 yards. However, he spent most of the spring camp sidelined due to an undisclosed injury. Given the depth at the wide receiver position, Freeman’s decision to transfer appears understandable, as he seeks more playing time and opportunities elsewhere.
His departure opens up a scholarship spot for Oklahoma, a team already stacked with talented wideouts such as Jalil Farooq, Deion Burks, Nic Anderson, Jayden Gibson, Andrel Anthony, and Brenen Thompson. Despite Freeman’s departure, the team remains well-equipped in that area.
Freeman is among the four scholarship players to leave Oklahoma via the transfer portal this post-spring window, joining Shane Whitter, Justin Harrington, and Jasiah Wagoner. Conversely, the Sooners have added two new players through the transfer portal: SMU offensive lineman Branson Hickman and Louisville defensive tackle Jermayne Lole.
