Xzavion Curry hadn’t anticipated his first start of the 2024 season occurring in mid-April, but his debut against one of the American League’s top offensive teams couldn’t have gone better. Following five scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox, Curry, a right-handed pitcher for the Guardians, expressed his joy at being back with his team and attributed his success to trusting in God’s plan.
Given Cleveland’s bullpen strain due to short starts and lengthy games over the weekend, Curry’s return from a 15-day stint on the injured list, recuperating from a spring training viral infection, was timely. He was added to the roster just before game time, replacing Peter Strzelecki, who was optioned to Triple-A Columbus.
In his five innings on the mound, Curry limited the potent Boston lineup to only two hits and a walk while striking out three. Utilizing his slider effectively, especially against left-handed batters, he garnered praise from manager Stephen Vogt for his sharp pitching.
