BREAKING NEWS: The University of Miami experiences a mixture of emotions as Meier departs, marking a bittersweet moment for the institution.

During a press conference at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables on Friday, March 22, 2024, Women’s Head Coach Katie Meier shared her retirement speech, accompanied by laughter and tears.

Expressing gratitude to her support network including players, staff, and family, Meier reflected on the difficulty of parting ways after years of commitment and trust. Transitioning into a new role as a special advisor to the Vice President/Director of Athletics at the University of Miami, Meier leaves behind a legacy of dedication and community impact. As she embarks on this new chapter, she acknowledges the challenges ahead while remaining optimistic and eager to contribute in different capacities.

 

Miami’s athletic director, Dan Radakovich, commended Meier for her transformative influence on women’s basketball, highlighting her ability to inspire players, coaches, and fans alike. With her departure from coaching after over three decades, Meier embraces the opportunity for growth and looks forward to continuing her support for aspiring athletes. Radakovich expressed confidence in Meier’s potential to excel in her new role, emphasizing her value as a mentor, leader, and ambassador for the university.

As she bids farewell to her coaching title, Meier pledges ongoing encouragement and inspiration to those she has mentored, signaling a transition from “coach” to simply “Katie.”
